Ay what's up it's your resident southern boy here to kick some knowledge to you yankee bustas. I been here a while and I see a serious lack of information about most below the surface southern artists, so over the coming weeks imma be putting out a few guides to some southern artists a lot of you probably know nothing about. This week, the legend, the originator, the one and only slug slow DJ Screw, I'll be covering the essentials within his discography, the great rappers surrounding him (commonly referred to as the Screwed Up Click), and the current status of the genre he founded, Chopped 'N' Screwed. Alright let's get this shit started.

DJ SCREW
Alright little history lesson for those of you that only know this name from Drake namedropping and over-hearing the conversations of cooler people than yourself, Robert Earl Davis Jr. was a Houston rapper, Dj, and Texas music pioneer. Screw is responsible for inventing the most beautiful form of southern Hip Hop ever to be blasted from the speakers of my Jeep Liberty, Chopped 'N' Screwed. CNS mixes are usually made by the slowing down and chopping up of an already created track. In most people with working ears it causes an almost cathartic level of relaxation, and is maybe the catchiest shit ever to come out of Hip Hop, often made more so by the enjoyment of Lean (Booze is good too if you a pussy, gettin zipped up to screw is second only to Leanin). The Whole Shit started in 1990, with him just selling his tapes out the back of his car at flea markets and swap meets, but by the late 90's, Screw and his team were running the Houston underground. Unfortunately, Screw died in 2000, before he could see the southwide embrace of his legacy around 2004. He has released over 250 mixtapes and six albums, i've listened to about 80% of his discography, and I haven't found a bad project

Essential Mixtapes
Alright, that's the slowest of the slow IMO, now moving on to the
SCREWED UP CLICK
The Screwed Up Click was a collective, headed by DJ Screw, of rappers and producers who worked extensively with DJ Screw and appeared on his mixtapes and albums regularly. As far as their Stuff as a Group, they only had a few projects, these are the best Essential Projects as a Group
Soldiers United 4 Cash(a great compilation album, probably the best starting point)
The group was big as fuck, and included some legendary southern emcees. In the whole history of the group, these are my favorite projects as Solo Artists or Sub-Groups
E.S.G. - Ocean Of Funk (Shouts out /u/dctrip13
(Note: not all these cats were fuckin with the screwed up click when these albums were released)

Screw Music Today
Now, depending on who you ask, CNS music didn't die with DJ Screw, there's plenty of cats been doing it just as big since he passed on. Especially since about 2003, it seems like ever major southern release comes out alongside a Chopped 'N' Screwed version. Here's some of the best DJ's slowin it down today

OG RON C
IMO, this dude is right under Screw, he been doing it for a long ass time, and his output is crazy. He also invented the term 'Chopped Not Slopped' and founded Swishahouse. Dude has Screwed some of the best albums of the 2000's and made em sound even better, and his compilation tapes are crazy as fuck, here's my favorites
Essential Projects
Fuck Action 18 jus 4 tha hos

Shouts out to /u/danielflair for reminding me. This dude is trill as fuck, kills every tape he screws. Also has an incredibly large output, just peep his Soundcloud like goddamn

And last but not least, Pollie Pop. Don't know much about the dude, but he has literally a million mixes on datpiff and they'reallawesome. Check him out for sure.
